Lebanon's four seasons
Lebanon is small but climatically varied. The coast (Beirut, Byblos, Tyre) is Mediterranean, while the mountains around the Cedars and the Bekaa Valley are far cooler and snow-bound in winter. You can genuinely ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon during spring.
Spring (April-June): the sweet spot
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit. Temperatures sit around 18-26C, wildflowers cover the hills, and the Qadisha Valley and Chouf cedar reserves are lush and green. Crowds are thin and prices are reasonable. Late spring also lets you combine the last snow at the Cedars with warm coastal days.
Summer (July-September): peak season
Summer is high season, driven by the Lebanese diaspora returning home and Gulf visitors. The coast is hot and humid (often 30C+), but the mountains stay pleasant. This is festival season:
- Baalbeck International Festival (July-August), staged among the Roman temples
- Beiteddine Art Festival in the Chouf palace
- Byblos International Festival by the old harbour
Expect higher hotel prices and busy beach clubs in Jbeil and Batroun. Book ahead.
Autumn (October-November): the quiet reward
Autumn is an underrated shoulder season. The sea stays warm enough to swim into October, the heat fades, and the grape harvest fills the Bekaa Valley wineries (Ksara, Kefraya, Chateau Musar). It is ideal for hiking the Lebanon Mountain Trail in comfortable temperatures.
Winter (December-March): snow and skiing
Winter brings rain to the coast and real snow to the mountains. Resorts like Mzaar Kfardebian (Faraya) and the Cedars draw skiers from December to March. Christmas and New Year are festive in Beirut, though some mountain villages are quiet and cold.
Festivals to plan around
- Holy Week and Easter (spring): processions in towns like Zahle and Jounieh
- Ramadan and Eid (dates shift yearly): special menus and lively evenings
- Beirut Wine Festival and harvest events in autumn
- Independence Day (22 November)
Quick verdict
For the best balance of weather, scenery and value, aim for late April to June or September to October. Choose July-August for festivals, December-February for snow.
