When is the best time to visit Greece?
Greece rewards almost any month, but the sweet spots are late April to mid-June and September to mid-October. You get warm seas, open tavernas and far fewer crowds than the July-August peak.
Spring (April to June)
Spring is arguably the finest season. Hillsides on Crete and the Peloponnese bloom with poppies and wild herbs, temperatures sit at a comfortable 18-26 C, and archaeological sites like the Acropolis and Delphi are pleasant to walk.
- Sea is swimmable from late May, especially in the Dodecanese
- Orthodox Easter (usually April or early May) brings candlelit processions, fireworks on Chios, and roast lamb everywhere
- Athens and the islands are lively but not overwhelmed
Summer (July and August)
This is peak season: hot, dry and busy. Expect 30-38 C, packed ferries to Santorini and Mykonos, and the meltemi, a strong north wind that cools the Cyclades but can disrupt sailings.
- Book ferries and hotels months ahead
- Prices peak; a island studio that costs 60 euros in May can hit 150 in August
- Head to less-trodden islands like Naxos, Kasos or the Sporades for breathing room
Autumn (September to October)
A favourite for repeat visitors. The sea is at its warmest after a summer of heating, crowds thin out, and prices drop sharply after mid-September.
- Swimming stays excellent into October
- Grape and olive harvests fill village festivals
- Athens enjoys clear, mild days ideal for sightseeing
Winter (November to March)
Quiet and cheap, with many island businesses shut. Athens, Thessaloniki and the mainland stay open year-round, and you can ski at Parnassos or Arachova.
- Mild winters in the south; snow in the mountains
- Carnival (Apokries) peaks in February-March, huge in Patras
- Great for culture-focused city breaks
Festivals worth planning around
- Orthodox Easter (spring) the biggest celebration of the year
- Athens & Epidaurus Festival (June-August) ancient theatre and concerts
- August 15 (Dekapentavgoustos) Assumption of the Virgin, with island pilgrimages, especially Tinos
- Patras Carnival (Jan-March) one of Europe's largest
