The Best Time to Visit Georgia: Seasons, Weather and Festivals

From spring wildflowers in Kakheti to ski season in Gudauri, here is when to visit Georgia for the best weather, fewer crowds and the biggest festivals.

When to go

Georgia packs Black Sea beaches, Caucasus peaks and wine valleys into one small country, so the best time depends on what you want. Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the sweet spots: warm days, green landscapes and manageable crowds.

The seasons at a glance

  • Spring (March to May): Tbilisi blooms, valleys turn green and temperatures climb from 10C to 22C. Mountain passes like Stepantsminda may still have snow into May.
  • Summer (June to August): Tbilisi gets hot (often 32C to 38C). Escape to the cool highlands of Svaneti, Tusheti and Kazbegi, or the Black Sea coast at Batumi.
  • Autumn (September to October): Grape harvest season, golden vineyards and crisp clear air. Arguably the best all-round window.
  • Winter (November to March): Cold and snowy in the mountains. Ski season at Gudauri and Bakuriani runs roughly December to March.

Peak vs shoulder season

Peak is July to August (coastal heat, packed Batumi) and the ski months of January and February. Prices and crowds rise. The shoulder seasons of May, June, September and October give you the best balance of weather, value and access to both mountains and lowlands.

Festivals and events by month

  • March: Spring arrives; Tbilisi cafe terraces reopen.
  • May: Tbilisi Open Air music festival and the lively New Wine Festival, where wineries pour their young vintages.
  • July to August: Black Sea season peaks in Batumi; open-air concerts and beach nightlife.
  • September: Tbilisoba is still weeks away, but harvest (rtveli) begins in Kakheti, the heart of Georgian winemaking around Telavi and Sighnaghi.
  • October: Tbilisoba, the capital's biggest celebration, fills the Old Town with food, wine and music. Rtveli continues across the wine country.
  • December to February: Ski season and Georgian Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, marked by the Alilo procession.

Quick picks

  • Beaches and nightlife: July to August in Batumi.
  • Wine and harvest: late September to October in Kakheti.
  • Hiking Svaneti and Tusheti: July to September, when high passes are clear.
  • Skiing: January to February in Gudauri.
  • Best value and weather: May, June and September.
