Getting around in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is huge and mountainous, so planning your transport saves both time and stress. Addis Ababa is the hub for nearly every route, whether you fly, ride the rail or take a long-distance bus.
Trains and light rail
Addis Ababa has a two-line Light Rail Transit (LRT), the first metro in sub-Saharan Africa. It runs east-west and north-south through the capital and costs only around 2-6 birr per trip. It is cheap and avoids traffic, though it can be crowded.
The electric Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway links the capital to the port of Djibouti, passing Dire Dawa. The passenger service is slow and schedules change, so confirm departures locally before relying on it.
Buses and intercity travel
For long distances, comfortable coach companies like Selam Bus, Sky Bus and Habesha Bus connect Addis Ababa with Bahir Dar, Gondar, Hawassa, Mekele and beyond. Book a day ahead, arrive early, and expect dawn departures from the Meskel Square area.
- Minibuses (blue-and-white) cover city and short regional routes for a few birr.
- Higer and Coaster buses serve mid-range towns.
- Roads are scenic but winding; long trips can take many hours.
Ride apps and taxis
In Addis Ababa, app-based rides are reliable. Ride, Feres and ZayRide are the main local apps, with fares far lower than agreeing a price with a street taxi. The classic blue-and-white Lada taxis still operate but always agree the fare first.
Car rental and driving
Most visitors hire a car with a driver rather than self-drive, because road signage, livestock and mountain passes make solo driving tough. Agencies in Addis arrange 4x4 vehicles for the Simien Mountains, the Omo Valley and the Danakil Depression, where a guide is required.
Domestic flights
For crossing the country quickly, Ethiopian Airlines flies to Lalibela, Gondar, Axum, Bahir Dar and more. If you arrived on Ethiopian Airlines internationally, domestic fares are heavily discounted, so book the same ticket.
Practical tips
- Carry small birr notes for minibuses and taxis.
- Traffic in Addis peaks at rush hour; allow extra time.
- Many drivers speak limited English, so have your destination written in Amharic.
