Why visit Estonia
Estonia packs a medieval capital, deep forests, 2,000 islands and a famously digital society into one compact Baltic country. Distances are short, nature is everywhere, and even small towns feel walkable and friendly.
Tallinn Old Town
The UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cores. Climb to Toompea Hill for the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Kohtuotsa viewing platform, wander the cobbled Town Hall Square, and walk a stretch of the city walls and their red-roofed towers.
Telliskivi Creative City
A former industrial quarter near the station, Telliskivi is Tallinn's hub for street art, design shops, vintage markets and food. The neighbouring Balti Jaam Market is great for snacks, berries and a local lunch.
Lahemaa National Park
An hour east of Tallinn, Lahemaa mixes pine forest, coastline and manor houses. Walk the boardwalk at Viru Bog, visit the restored Palmse and Sagadi manors, and look for elk, beavers and bears in the wild.
Saaremaa island
Estonia's largest island is reached by ferry from Virtsu. See Kuressaare Castle, a moated medieval bishop's stronghold, the Kaali meteorite crater lakes, and old wooden windmills. The slow island pace is the point.
Tartu
The country's university town and a former European Capital of Culture, Tartu has a lively student vibe, the leaning house on Town Hall Square, the riverside, and the excellent Estonian National Museum.
Soomaa and bog hikes
For wild Estonia, head to bogs like Soomaa or Kakerdaja. Rent bog shoes (snowshoe-like frames) or join a guided canoe trip during the spring "fifth season" floods. Sunrise over a misty bog is unforgettable.
Pärnu
Estonia's summer capital, Pärnu, has a long sandy beach, a relaxed spa-town atmosphere and wooden Art Nouveau villas. It's the easiest place to swim in the Baltic on a warm day.
Estonian sauna culture
Sauna is sacred here. Try a public smoke sauna in Võromaa (the tradition is UNESCO-listed) or a beachside sauna, then plunge into a lake or the sea. It's the most authentically Estonian thing you can do.
Practical tips
- Summer brings long, bright "white nights"; winters are cold and snowy.
- Tap water is safe and the country is very card- and app-friendly.
- Public transport in Tallinn is free for registered residents but cheap for visitors.
