Best Time to Visit Denmark: Seasons, Weather and Festivals

From cozy winter hygge to bright midsummer nights, here is when to visit Denmark for the best weather, fewer crowds and the festivals worth planning around.

When to go

Denmark is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot for most travellers is late May to early September, when days are long, terraces fill up and the countryside turns green. Summer is genuinely beautiful here, though even July can throw cool, rainy days at you.

Summer: peak season (June to August)

This is high season. Copenhagen, the beaches of North Zealand and the island of Bornholm are at their busiest, and prices for hotels and flights climb.

  • Weather: average highs of 20 to 22°C, with long daylight (sunset near 22:00 around midsummer).
  • What's on: Sankt Hans Aften bonfires on 23 June, the Roskilde Festival (one of Europe's biggest, late June/early July), Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July and Aarhus's Northside Festival.
  • Book ahead for Tivoli Gardens, beach houses and ferries to Bornholm.

Shoulder season: spring and early autumn

For good value and thinner crowds, aim for May, early June or September.

  • Spring (April to May): parks bloom, Tivoli reopens in mid-April, and locals re-emerge after winter.
  • September: mild days, golden light and harvest menus; the Copenhagen Cooking and Food Festival celebrates New Nordic cuisine.
  • Pack layers; weather is changeable but hotel rates ease noticeably.

Autumn and winter: low season

October to March is quiet, dark and atmospheric.

  • Weather: cold and grey, with highs of 2 to 8°C and short days (sunset near 15:30 in December).
  • Hygge season: candlelit cafés, design shopping and museums shine now.
  • Christmas: Tivoli's Christmas market, Nyhavn lights and gløgg (mulled wine) make November and December magical despite the dark.
  • January and February are the cheapest but bleakest months.

Quick verdict

  • Best overall: June and September.
  • Best weather: July.
  • Best value: May and late September.
  • Best for festivals: late June to July.
  • Best for hygge: December.
