The Best Time to Visit Chile: Seasons, Weather and Festivals

Chile stretches from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia, so timing depends on where you go. Here is a month-by-month guide to seasons, peak vs shoulder periods, and key festivals.

Why timing matters in Chile

Chile runs more than 4,000 km north to south, so there is no single best season. Seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere: summer is December to February, winter is June to August. Match the month to the region you most want to see.

Summer (December to February)

This is peak season and the only reliable window for Patagonia and Torres del Paine, where days are long and trails like the W trek are open. Expect strong wind, daytime highs around 15 to 18 C in the far south, and full lodges. Santiago and the central valleys are hot and dry, often above 30 C. Book Patagonia accommodation months ahead and bring layers for sudden weather swings.

Autumn (March to May)

A superb shoulder season. Crowds thin, prices drop, and the Colchagua and Maipo wine valleys host the grape harvest. Vineyards near Santa Cruz hold harvest festivals (Fiesta de la Vendimia) in March. Weather stays mild and stable, ideal for Santiago, Valparaiso and central Chile.

Winter (June to August)

Low season for most travel but prime time for skiing. Resorts like Valle Nevado, Portillo and Farellones near Santiago open from June. The far south is cold, wet and largely shut. The Atacama Desert in the north stays dry and clear year-round, with cold nights perfect for stargazing.

Spring (September to November)

Another excellent shoulder window. The central valleys bloom and, in a good year, the desierto florido (flowering desert) carpets the Atacama fringe with wildflowers, usually around September to October. Patagonia begins to reopen by November.

Key festivals by month

  • February: Festival Internacional de la Cancion de Vina del Mar, a huge music event on the coast
  • February: Tapati Rapa Nui on Easter Island, two weeks of Polynesian competitions
  • March: wine harvest festivals across Colchagua
  • September 18 to 19: Fiestas Patrias, national independence celebrations with asados and cueca dancing
  • July: La Tirana religious festival near Iquique, with thousands of costumed dancers

Best regions at a glance

  • Atacama: good all year; avoid the cold July nights if stargazing comfort matters
  • Patagonia: December to March only
  • Wine country: March to April for harvest
  • Ski resorts: June to September
  • Easter Island: mild year-round, busiest in February
