Before you go
Cambodia is warm, affordable and wonderfully welcoming, but a little planning makes Angkor Wat sunrises and Phnom Penh markets far smoother. Here is what every first-timer should know.
Plugs and voltage
Cambodia runs on 230V at 50Hz. Sockets are usually Type A, C and G, so plugs from the US, Europe and the UK often fit, but a universal adapter removes all doubt. Power can flicker in rural areas, so a power bank is wise. Most phone and laptop chargers handle 230V automatically.
Language basics
The national language is Khmer. English is widely spoken in tourist areas like Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. A few phrases go a long way:
- Hello - Suor sdei
- Thank you - Aw kun
- Yes / No - Baat (men) or Jaa (women) / Te
- How much? - Tlai ponman?
What to pack
- Lightweight, breathable clothing for the tropical heat
- A scarf or sarong to cover shoulders and knees at temples
- Strong sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent with DEET
- Comfortable shoes for walking the vast Angkor complex
- US dollars in small bills - they are used alongside Cambodian riel
Staying connected
WiFi is common in hotels and cafes but can be slow. For reliable internet on the go, a local SIM or eSIM is essential. The US dollar is king, but you will receive change in riel (roughly 4,000 riel to 1 USD).
Quick tips
- Carry small dollar bills. Vendors rarely break large notes, and torn or marked dollars may be refused.
- Negotiate tuk-tuk fares first. Agree the price before you ride, or use the Grab or PassApp ride apps.
- Visit Angkor early. Gates open before sunrise; buy a one, three or seven-day pass at the official ticket office.
- Drink bottled water only. Avoid ice in remote spots and carry rehydration salts.
- Dress modestly at temples. Cover shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes and hat where signs indicate.
- Beware scams. Politely decline overly friendly strangers offering tours or sob stories near landmarks.
- Respect the past. At sites like the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng, stay quiet and reflective.
- Tip modestly. It is not mandatory but appreciated; round up or leave a dollar or two.
