Cambodia Travel Budget: How Much Does a Trip Really Cost?

Realistic daily budgets for Cambodia, sample prices for food, transport and temples, plus money tips to stretch every dollar.

How much does Cambodia cost?

Cambodia is one of Southeast Asia's best-value destinations. Most travelers spend $25 to $50 a day as backpackers, $60 to $120 for comfortable mid-range travel, and $150 or more for boutique hotels and private guides. Prices are quoted in US dollars, which are used everywhere alongside the Cambodian riel.

Daily budgets at a glance

  • Shoestring: $25 to $40 - guesthouse dorms, street food, shared tuk-tuks
  • Mid-range: $60 to $120 - private rooms, restaurants, day tours
  • Comfort: $150 plus - boutique stays, drivers, fine dining

Sample prices

  • Dorm bed in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh: $5 to $10
  • Mid-range double room with air-con: $25 to $45
  • Street noodles or fried rice: $1.50 to $3
  • Restaurant meal (amok, lok lak): $5 to $8
  • Large draft Angkor beer: $0.50 to $1
  • Coffee or fruit shake: $1 to $2
  • Tuk-tuk across town: $2 to $4
  • Angkor Archaeological Park 1-day pass: $37 (3-day: $62)

Money and cards

ATMs are common in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville but charge $4 to $6 per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts. Most dispense USD; you'll receive change under $1 in riel (about 4,000 riel to $1). Carry clean, untorn dollar notes, as worn bills are often refused. Cards work in upscale hotels and restaurants, but cash rules markets, tuk-tuks and rural areas.

Smart ways to save

  • Eat where locals eat - markets like Phnom Penh's Central Market are cheap and delicious
  • Hire a tuk-tuk driver for a full Angkor day (around $20 to $25) rather than per ride
  • Travel between cities by Giant Ibis or local bus instead of flying
  • Buy the 3-day Angkor pass if you want more than one temple day
  • Drink the local beer and skip imported wine
  • Negotiate politely - small bargaining at markets is expected

Watch out for

Budget extra for the Angkor pass, a possible $30 e-visa, and tips for guides and drivers. Sihanoukville and the islands (Koh Rong) cost more than inland towns.
