Getting Around Bulgaria: Trains, Buses, Metro & Car Rental Guide

How to travel Bulgaria like a local: Sofia metro, BDZ trains, intercity buses, ride apps, and car rental tips with real routes and prices.

Trains in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's state railway, BDZ, links most major cities. Trains are cheap and scenic but slow. The Sofia to Plovdiv run takes around 2.5 hours, while Sofia to Varna or Burgas can take 7-8 hours. Buy tickets at the station counter or via the BDZ website; fares are modest, often 10-25 BGN for intercity routes. Opt for a fast train (бърз влак) over a slow passenger train where possible.

Sofia metro

The capital's Sofia Metro has three lines and is the fastest way across the city, including a direct link to Sofia Airport (Terminal 2) on Line 1. A single ride costs 1.60 BGN, and you can pay contactlessly with a bank card at the turnstile. Trains run roughly 05:00 to midnight.

Buses and intercity travel

For speed and frequency, intercity buses often beat trains. Companies like Union Ivkoni, Group Travel, and Biomet connect Sofia with Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and beyond. Sofia's Central Bus Station (Tsentralna Avtogara) sits next to the main train station. Book online or at the counter; Sofia to Plovdiv runs about 14-18 BGN and takes under 2 hours.

City transport

Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna have trams, trolleybuses, and buses. In Sofia, single tickets cost 1.60 BGN; validate paper tickets or tap a card. Buy from kiosks, machines, or the driver.

Ride apps and taxis

TaxiMe and Yellow! (Yellow Taxi) are the trusted apps in Sofia. Always use the app or a clearly marked, metered taxi - check the per-kilometre rate on the window. Avoid unmarked cars at the airport. A typical city ride costs a few leva.

Car rental and driving

Renting a car opens up the Rila Monastery, the Black Sea coast, and mountain villages. A vignette (toll sticker) is mandatory on highways - buy an e-vignette online or at petrol stations. Roads are generally good, though rural routes can be rough. Drive on the right, and keep headlights on as required.

Intercity tips

  • Book popular summer coast routes a day ahead in peak season.
  • Carry small cash; some kiosks and rural drivers don't take cards.
  • Validate every paper ticket to avoid fines.
  • Allow buffer time - rural buses can run late.
