When to go
Bulgaria works year-round, but the best window for most travellers is late May to early July and September, when the weather is warm, prices are reasonable and the big crowds haven't arrived (or have left).
The seasons
- Spring (April-June): Green valleys, blooming roses and mild days of 15-25C. Sofia, Plovdiv and the monasteries are at their best.
- Summer (July-August): Hot inland (often 30-35C) and peak season on the Black Sea. Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are packed and pricey.
- Autumn (September-October): Warm sea, grape harvest, golden forests. Arguably the sweetest time to travel.
- Winter (December-March): Ski season in Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo; cold and often snowy in the mountains.
Peak vs shoulder season
The coast peaks in July and August, when hotel rates double and beaches fill up. The mountains peak from late December to early March. For value and space, target the shoulder months: May, June, September and October on the coast and cities, and late March for the tail end of skiing.
Festivals and events by month
- January: Surva Masquerade Festival in Pernik, with terrifying kukeri costumes.
- March: Martenitsa (March 1) red-and-white tokens for health and spring.
- May-June: Rose Festival in Kazanlak (first weekend of June) celebrating the rose harvest in the Valley of Roses.
- June: Sofia hosts open-air concerts; the Black Sea season opens.
- July: Spirit of Burgas and beach music festivals along the coast.
- August: Rozhen folklore gatherings and mountain fairs.
- September: Plovdiv wine and culture events; grape harvest in Melnik.
- December: Christmas markets in Sofia and Plovdiv; ski resorts open.
A quick verdict
- Beach holiday: June or September (warm sea, fewer crowds than August).
- City and culture: May or October.
- Skiing: January-February in Bansko.
- Budget travel: April, May or late September.
