Austria Travel Budget: Daily Costs, Prices & Money-Saving Tips

What does a trip to Austria really cost? Here are realistic daily budgets, sample prices for food and transport, and practical ways to save in Vienna, Salzburg and the Alps.

How much does a trip to Austria cost?

Austria is one of Western Europe's pricier destinations, but it offers strong value for the quality you get. Your daily spend depends heavily on the city: Vienna and Salzburg cost more than Graz, Linz or smaller alpine towns.

Here are realistic daily budgets per person (excluding flights):

  • Budget: 70-95 EUR with hostels, supermarket meals and public transport
  • Mid-range: 130-200 EUR with a 3-star hotel, restaurant lunches and some attractions
  • Comfort: 280 EUR and up with boutique hotels, fine dining and guided tours

Sample prices in Austria

  • Cappuccino in a Viennese coffee house: 4-5.50 EUR
  • A glass of beer (0.5 L): 4.50-6 EUR
  • Wiener Schnitzel in a casual restaurant: 16-24 EUR
  • Sausage from a Wurstelstand: 4-6 EUR
  • Slice of Sachertorte at Cafe Sacher: around 9 EUR
  • Supermarket lunch (Billa, Spar, Hofer): 6-10 EUR
  • Hostel dorm bed: 28-45 EUR; mid-range double room: 100-160 EUR

Getting around

Vienna's public transport is excellent value. A single ticket costs 2.40 EUR and a 24-hour pass is 8 EUR; the 72-hour Vienna pass is around 17 EUR. The OBB national railway connects cities efficiently; Vienna to Salzburg by train costs roughly 20-60 EUR depending on how early you book. Booking Sparschiene fares in advance saves a lot.

Money and cards

Austria uses the euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for small cafes, bakeries, Wurstelstande, public toilets and rural areas, where card-only is still less common than in Scandinavia. Contactless and Apple/Google Pay work in most shops. Tipping is modest: round up or add 5-10 percent for good service.

Smart ways to save

  • Buy a city card (Vienna City Card, Salzburg Card) for free transport plus museum discounts
  • Eat your main meal at lunch, when many restaurants offer a Mittagsmenu for 9-13 EUR
  • Drink tap water (Vienna's comes straight from alpine springs and is excellent)
  • Visit free sights: Stephansdom nave, Naschmarkt, the Hofburg gardens and Danube paths
  • Travel by regional train with the Einfach-Raus ticket for groups
  • Shop at Hofer or Lidl for picnic supplies

With planning, a comfortable mid-range trip runs about 150 EUR per day, while careful backpackers manage well under 100 EUR.
