When to go to Armenia
Armenia packs four real seasons into a small, mountainous country. Yerevan sits at about 1,000 metres, while highland regions like Aragats and Syunik climb far higher, so weather swings sharply with altitude. The short version: late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot.
Spring (April-June)
Spring is arguably the finest time to visit. Valleys turn green, orchards blossom, and the hills around Khor Virap and Areni fill with wildflowers. Daytime temperatures in Yerevan climb from the mid-teens in April to the mid-20s Celsius by June.
- Ideal for hiking, monastery-hopping and the Caucasus countryside
- Lake Sevan is still cool but beautiful
- Vardavar (a joyful water-throwing festival, usually mid-July but rooted in spring tradition) is a highlight to plan around
Summer (July-August)
Summer is peak season and the warmest stretch. Yerevan can hit 35-40C, so locals escape to higher ground. This is the best time for Lake Sevan beaches, the cool resort town of Dilijan, and the alpine meadows of Aragats.
- Hottest in the Ararat plain; far more pleasant in the mountains
- Yerevan Wine Days and open-air concerts fill the city
- Book accommodation early around Sevan
Autumn (September-October)
Many travellers call autumn the best season of all. The heat breaks, light turns golden, and the Areni Wine Festival in October celebrates Armenia's 6,000-year winemaking heritage with tastings straight from the source.
- Comfortable 20-25C days, ideal for sightseeing
- Grape and pomegranate harvest season
- Stunning foliage in Dilijan and Lori
Winter (November-March)
Winter is cold and snowy, especially in the highlands, but it has its own charm. Tsaghkadzor offers skiing just an hour from Yerevan, and the capital glows for Armenian Christmas on 6 January.
- Budget-friendly, few tourists
- Skiing and snowy monastery views
- Pack serious warm layers; some mountain roads close
Quick verdict
- Best overall: May-June and September-October
- Best for beaches and festivals: July-August
- Best for skiing and low prices: December-February
