Why timing matters in Argentina
Argentina stretches over 3,600 km from the subtropical north to the windswept tip of Patagonia, so there is no single "best" season. The country sits in the Southern Hemisphere, meaning seasons are flipped: summer runs December to February, winter June to August. Choose your window by region, not just by month.
Summer (December to February)
This is peak season for Patagonia. El Chalten, El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier enjoy long days and the most reliable trekking weather, though prices and crowds spike. Buenos Aires, by contrast, turns hot and humid (often above 32C) and many locals flee to the Atlantic coast. The Lake District around Bariloche is glorious.
Autumn (March to May): the sweet spot
Autumn is many travelers' favorite. Mendoza's wine country glows gold during the grape harvest, and the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia lights up the city in early March. Buenos Aires cools to pleasant strolling weather, and the Iguazu Falls run full with fewer tourists.
Winter (June to August)
Winter is ski season. Resorts like Cerro Catedral (Bariloche) and Las Lenas draw snow lovers from July. The far north stays warm and dry, making it ideal for the Salinas Grandes salt flats and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Patagonia largely shuts down.
Spring (September to November)
Spring brings blooming jacarandas to Buenos Aires, whale watching at Peninsula Valdes (peak September to November), and mild, dry days nationwide. It rivals autumn as the best all-rounder.
Festivals worth planning around
- Vendimia (Mendoza, early March) wine harvest festival
- Carnaval (February, especially Gualeguaychu and the northwest)
- Tango BA Festival y Mundial (August, Buenos Aires)
- Dia de la Tradicion (November, San Antonio de Areco gaucho culture)
Quick picks
- Patagonia trekking: November to March
- Wine and harvest: March (Mendoza)
- Skiing: July to September
- Whales and northwest deserts: June to November
