Andorra Safety Tips: What to Know Before You Go

Andorra is one of Europe's safest destinations, but mountain weather, winding roads and a few petty scams still catch travelers out. Here's what to know.

How safe is Andorra?

Andorra is one of the safest countries in Europe. Violent crime is extremely rare, and the small population of around 80,000 means tight-knit, well-policed towns. The Cos de Policia (national police) is professional and visible, especially in the capital Andorra la Vella and the shopping hub of Escaldes-Engordany.

Most trouble for visitors involves weather, driving and the occasional pickpocket, not personal danger.

Common scams and petty crime

Crime is low, but stay alert in crowds and busy shops:

  • Pickpocketing in crowded duty-free shops along Avinguda Meritxell and at the Pas de la Casa border, especially during winter sales.
  • Car break-ins at trailheads and ski-resort car parks. Never leave bags, electronics or ski gear visible.
  • Overpriced taxis or unofficial transfers from the border. Agree on the fare or confirm the meter before setting off.
  • Fake "too-good" electronics deals in duty-free zones. Andorra is genuinely cheaper, but check warranties and box seals.

Driving and mountain roads

The biggest real risk is the road. Andorra sits high in the Pyrenees, and the main routes (CG-1, CG-2, CG-3) climb steep, hairpin passes.

  • In winter, snow chains or winter tyres are often legally required; police set up checks.
  • The Port d'Envalira pass (2,408 m) can close in storms.
  • Watch for black ice, fog and sudden whiteouts. Drive slowly and keep your distance.

Mountain and ski safety

  • Check avalanche bulletins before off-piste skiing at Grandvalira or Vallnord.
  • Altitude can cause headaches; hydrate and pace yourself.
  • Tell someone your route before hiking, and carry water, layers and a charged phone.
  • Mountain rescue exists but can be slow in bad weather, so don't take risks.

Health, money and practical tips

  • Andorra is not in the EU, so the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) is not valid. Get travel insurance with medical and ski cover.
  • The currency is the euro, though Andorra isn't an EU member. Cards are widely accepted.
  • Tap water is safe to drink.
  • Pharmacies (farmàcia) are well stocked for minor issues.

Emergency numbers

  • 112 — general emergency (police, fire, ambulance), English often spoken.
  • 118 — mountain rescue and fire service.
  • 116 — medical emergencies.

Save these and keep your accommodation address handy.
