When to go
Algeria is huge, spanning a green Mediterranean coast and the vast Sahara, so the best time depends on where you are headed. For most travellers, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, offering warm days, mild evenings and manageable desert heat.
The seasons
- Spring (Mar to May): The sweet spot. Algiers, Oran and Constantine enjoy 18 to 25 C, wildflowers cover the Tell hills, and the desert around Ghardaia and Timimoun is still pleasant.
- Summer (Jun to Aug): Coastal beaches near Annaba and Tipaza buzz with local holidaymakers, but the Sahara is brutally hot, often above 45 C. Avoid Tamanrasset and the Tassili n Ajjer at this time.
- Autumn (Sep to Nov): Sea is still warm for swimming, the heat eases inland, and it is prime time to begin Saharan tours.
- Winter (Dec to Feb): Mild and rainy on the coast (10 to 16 C), snow on the Djurdjura mountains in Kabylie, and crisp, sunny days in the desert with cold nights.
Peak vs shoulder season
Domestic tourism peaks in July and August along the coast, when prices rise and beaches fill. International visitors find the best value and weather in the shoulder months of April, May, October and November. The desert season runs roughly October to March, when daytime temperatures are comfortable for trekking the dunes and exploring the rock art of Tassili.
Festivals and events by month
- February to March: Sebeiba festival traditions and pre-spring desert moussems in the south.
- April to May: Cultural festivals in Algiers; pleasant weather for the Roman ruins at Timgad and Djemila.
- July: Timgad International Festival of music in the ancient Roman theatre is a highlight.
- Throughout the year: Ramadan reshapes daily life, with daytime closures and lively evenings; dates shift earlier each year, so check before booking.
- Sahara winter: Local date harvests and oasis moussems around Biskra and the Ziban region.
Practical tips
- The Sahara is best from late autumn to early spring; never trek the deep desert in summer.
- Pack layers for the desert, where nights can drop near freezing in winter.
- Friday is the main rest day, so plan museum and shop visits accordingly.
